Bladder Leakage Treatment in Derry: What Can Help?
Laughing, lifting or exercising should not come with a constant worry about leaks. If bladder leakage is changing your day, there are practical steps you can take. The Restore Clinic in Derry offers private consultations and fully clothed pelvic-floor chair sessions for suitable women and men.
It may be common, but that does not mean you have to quietly put up with it.
Why does stress leakage happen?
Pressure inside the abdomen rises during coughing, jumping, running or lifting. The pelvic floor and urinary sphincter normally help keep the bladder outlet closed. Leakage can occur when this support is not strong or well coordinated enough to manage the sudden increase in pressure.
Pregnancy and birth, menopause, pelvic surgery, prostate treatment, chronic coughing, constipation and ageing may contribute. However, leakage can have different causes, which is why persistent or changing symptoms deserve proper attention.
Pelvic-floor muscle training
The NHS states that pelvic-floor exercises can be effective at reducing leaks when performed correctly and consistently. Training normally includes both longer holds and short, quick contractions.
The important word is correctly. Squeezing the buttocks, thighs or abdominal muscles is not the same as contracting the pelvic floor. Some people also have an overactive or poorly coordinated pelvic floor rather than simple weakness, so more squeezing is not always the answer.
For women with stress or mixed urinary incontinence, NICE recommends a supervised pelvic-floor muscle training programme lasting at least three months. Your GP can help arrange an appropriate referral.
Where can a pelvic-floor chair fit?
The Ultra Tesla chair stimulates repeated pelvic-floor muscle contractions while the client remains fully clothed. It does not involve an internal examination. It may be considered as part of a pelvic-floor strengthening plan after an individual suitability check.
At The Restore Clinic in Derry, the emphasis is on privacy and clear explanations. We do not assume every case of leakage is the same, and we will recommend medical or specialist assessment when needed.
Small everyday changes can matter
- Treat a persistent cough rather than ignoring it.
- Avoid straining with constipation.
- Build exercise intensity gradually.
- Reduce caffeine if it noticeably worsens urgency.
- Do not deliberately reduce fluids to an unhealthy level.
- Ask for help if leakage is affecting sport, work, sleep or confidence.
